The  Governor  General  also  performs  other  duties,  such   as entertaining  foreign visitors, giving honours  to  distinguished Canadians,  opening  hospitals, museums, and art  galleries, and lending support to worthy causes and events.


The House of Commons






So, in addition  to  ensuring  party discipline,  the  party  whip  must educate  party members about the ramifications of party  policies, so that they are widely understood by  the members. Whips are the party negotiators who decide among themselves  what items  on the agenda are subject to political compromise and  how much debate will be expended on them.







The Role of the Opposition






The Senate

The Upper legislative House of Parliament is our Senate, which is located  at the east end of the Centre Block. The Senate Chamber, sometimes  called  the  red Chamber, features  red  carpeting  and upholstery  capped by a ceiling of gold leaf where  two  bronze chandeliers,  weighing over two tonnes each,  are  suspended. The walls  of  the  Senate  Chamber are lined with  murals  depicting scenes from World War 1. In the white oak panels below the murals are carvings showing Canada's assorted plant and animal life.
